The tree nursery operator

Sabina Otieno is the Secretary of the Nyatoto Ruma Women Group based in Lwala Village, Nyatoto sub location, Homa Bay County. The group which has 20 members, was founded in 1999 as a merry-go-round (table banking) scheme. Driven by a passion for restoration and a need to diversify their income streams, the group sought training through the Regreening Africa Programme on tree nursery operations and agroforestry in 2018 and thereafter started their tree nursery.

Other than tree nursery operations and fruit tree agroforestry, the training also covered community video taking, governance, resource mobilisation, and management. Sabina consequently received video taking equipment, a shade and a 2500 litre water tank to boost tree seedling production.

Sabina and her group have trained 510 people across 51 villages in Homa Bay County, in tree nursery operations and regreening practices.

The group dreams of a green Homa Bay county where all its people know the importance of restoration, particularly for food security and soil conservation.
