Regreening Africa is supporting farmers to deploy farmer-managed natural regeneration and other land restoration practices previously supported by World Vision Senegal in the Kaffrine Region where farmers have witnessed an increase in crop yields, fodder and soil organic matter and a reduction in erosion.

Approaches to reversing land degradation

In Senegal, Regreening Africa operates at two levels:

1) Direct implementation with local communities

  • Direct expansion of scale that removes the structural and behavioural barriers to regreening
  • Awareness created of the drivers and impact of land degradation, building the capacity and engagement of agricultural extension officers and local communities
  • Strengthening tree-based value chains

2) Supporting policy, practice and investment decisions

Development partners, the private sector, local and national policy-makers are provided with technical support that informs their investment decisions and creates synergies with other regreening initiatives to increase the speed and scale of adoption.

Project sites

The project is implemented in 3 rural regions of Fatick, Kaolack and Kaffrine. This choice is justified by the implementation experience of Assisted Natural Regeneration (RNA) in the Kaffrine region and allows optimization of project interventions.

Expected impact

  • Regreening practices adopted by at least 50,000 households on at least 100,000 hectares through direct support from Regreening Africa
  • Regreening practices adopted by at least 30,000 farm households on at least 60,000 hectares through indirect support from Regreening Africa
  • Inversed land degradation trends
  • Improved agricultural production and diversified household incomes
  • Improved resilience of family farms and ecosystems
