Advocating for policies that encourage women and girls to participate in decision-making about landscape restoration and sustainability

Kathy Wanjiru Njuguna, a published author, is a gender professional and a peace ambassador. She is enthusiastic about environmental conservation  and sustainability.

She is motivated by knowing she can be part of the change she wants to see in her community. From voicing unspoken vices to implementing conflict transformation at the grassroots. She advocates for policies that promote the participation of women and girls in decision making concerning landscape restoration and conservation is critical in achieving sustainability. This is because although women and children have a smaller ecological footprint, they are the ones most affected by ecological degradation.

“Women (rural and indigenous) are crucial in landscape restoration and can teach us how to rebalance our relationship with nature and reduce the risk of future pandemics.”

She contributed towards implementing the Minamata Convention on Mercury in Kenya. The goal of the convention is protecting human health and the environment from the unregulated release of Mercury into the environment.

“I am passionate about protecting biodiversity, as a means of securing human wellbeing and combating climate change. All people deserve a dignified life free from oppression, discrimination and intersecting inequalities.”
