Restoring and conserving the environment with the aim of reducing the carbon footprint

Kandi is a Social Scientist focused on sustainable development and peace.

Over the years Kandi has made it her life’s mission to achieve sustainable community development and empower communities to find lasting solutions to some of the socio-economic challenges they face. This was her greatest motivation for founding a community based organization known as Light On A Hill (LOAH) that focuses on environmental conservation, education and talent development.

Under LOAH, she started an initiative known as ‘Save Mama Earth’ that is mainly focused towards environmental conservation and restoration with the aim of reducing the carbon footprint. Together with group members, they established a tree nursery and they plant trees in collaboration with schools where they also do Environmental Conservation Advocacy with the students. Moreover, they conduct clean up exercises and see to the recycling of the plastics and glass bottles. Going forward, they envision creating green spaces to improve plant cover and their community’s well being.

So far, they have managed to plant and grow 728 tree seedlings, mentored over 60 kids ‘mazingira shujaaz’ on environmental conservation and restoration, carried out 5 community clean ups and advocacy activities in company of the mazingira shujaaz, had one successful exchange visit to a green space of sister organization (ICT 011) located in Isiolo County in company of 40 of the mazingira shujaaz and established 2 tree nurseries that hosted 1700 tree seedlings in 2021.

In recognition of her great work, Kandi was selected to be one of the Global Landscapes Forum’s Restoration Stewards for 2022 and has received a grant of 5000 euros to develop her restoration projects.
