Empowering communities in environmental conservation and sustainable income generating activities
Grace works with the Kijabe Environment Volunteers (KENVO) as a Membership and front office officer. Since joining KENVO, she has been involved in projects such as empowering the community in conservation of natural resources, showing the opportunities in environmental conservation, and creating forums for them to air their issues to the County and National government.
In addition, she has been involved in forest rehabilitation and restoration programmes through tree planting, conducting environmental education and income generating activities that are sustainable and contribute to environmental conservation such as beekeeping, tree nursery establishment and management as well as climate smart agriculture. She is currently launching an organic farm of traditional vegetables, a three-year project aimed at restoring soil fertility and filling the traditional vegetables market gap while empowering the youth through job creation.
“Change is possible as long as we are willing to change”
Grace has personally planted 1500 indigenous trees in Kereita forest and contributed to the empowerment of close to 3500 community members in 8 Community Forest Associations in Kiambu County. The creation of learning forums aimed at reducing youth employment by highlighting opportunities in environmental conservation to curb food security and available online jobs is another notable achievement. Two hundred youth have benefited from these forums.
