Combating climate crisis through nature-based solutions
Sumaiya Harunany is a climate activist from Mombasa, Kenya. She is the founder of Blue Earth Organization, an organization focused on tackling plastic pollution, regenerating areas affected by pollution and combating the climate crisis through Nature Based Solutions.
Her passion for Environmentalism was ignited by seeing the harm plastics were doing to the oceans and the surrounding beaches. She creates awareness on environmental issues through public sensitization and active participation.
The Blue Earth Organization adopted a 2Ha plot of land in Mkupe in December 2019 and have since planted 10,400 mangrove seedlings. The seedlings are sourced from the local community which provides a source of income for the farmers.
Besides being a breeding ground for marine animals, mangroves are 4x more efficient as carbon sinks relative to rain forests. It is for this reason that BEO is so keen on restoring the mangrove vegetation at the coast of Kenya.
When not rehabilitating mangrove forests, Sumaiya and her colleagues engage in peer mentorship on matters conservation and its impact on the community.
