This theme will look into how to develop strategies for bringing together grassroot organizations to catalyze large-scale restoration at local level. Several types of grassroot organizations or organizations with grassroot reach will be examined to highlight their restoration initiatives. What’s possible, what’s required to start such initiatives and upscale them along with ways of collaborating with them will then be identified.
Examples of such organizations that will be examined include : Faith based organizations, community forest associations, environmental groups in schools, etc.Lastly, restoration activities by proactive county governments across Kenya will be showcased. With respect to county government involvement, the following aspects will be the focus :
- Specific restoration activities they are involved in.
- Lessons that can be replicated in other counties in line with how they work with local communities to implement restoration and engage them in public participation processes as well as how restoration activities /initiatives are factored into county budgeting and planning processes.
- Preparedness for forest and landscape restoration in terms of necessary policy and legislative framework to support or catalyze these processes.
Thus, the overall session objectives are:
- To promote the understanding the need for strong grassroot movements for landscape restoration in Kenya.
- To promote an understanding of the role of grassroot organisations or organisations with grassroot reach in landscape restoration in Kenya including how they participate in FLR – Could also look at some organisations that are partnering with them e.g KFS, KEFRI and ICRAF.
- To explore how synergies between the various grass root organisations can be encouraged E.g CFA membership is wide, consisting of e.g faith leaders, teachers, hence able to mobilise widely.
