Damaris Mungai is an environmentalist who has devoted her entire life on matters environmental sustainability. From being in wildlife clubs in primary and high schools and being part of the very vibrant environment focused university clubs to joining national, regional and international bodies in the quest for environmental sustainability.

She has over the years successfully worked on different environmental aspects while connecting them with themes that really matter such as poverty reduction, conservation economics, ecosystem management, development communication, gender and youth as the environment is a pillar that cannot be handled in isolation.

In her current position at the United Nations Environment programme, she leads the gender and youth portfolio in the UNEP-Africa Office and has taken these two aspects to the next level. The greatest milestone was having the opportunity to harness the dynamism of approximately 100 contributing authors and 13 lead authors in Africa in the production of the Global Environment Outlook for youth-Africa Edition whose main purpose was to showcase the wealth of green opportunities for youth to tap in Africa. Further, in the spirit of providing women voices, she is a proud member of the Network of Africa Women Environmentalists.

She holds a master’s degree in water resources management – University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, a post graduate diploma in environmental journalism and communication – Makerere University, Uganda and a bachelor’s degree in environmental planning and management from, Kenyatta University, Kenya.
